Leonard Cohen (disclaimer: not an Ohioan) is a brilliant songwriter and performer, but I’ve always thought the production of his recordings overshadowed his songwriting. This is especially true for the production “catastrophe” (Cohen’s own word) Death of a Ladies’ Man.
Fortunately, Greg Dulli is here to rescue “Paper Thin Hotel” from that album’s excess. With just a piano, harmonium, violin, bass guitar, and Dulli’s ragged voice, this version is just about perfect.
Greg Dulli, best known for leading Cincinnati’s Afghan Whigs and The Twilight Singers, can do no wrong behind the microphone. He should do an entire album of Cohen covers.
